| Origin: Bahia (Brazil) |

Description: Obtained from
palm leaf-stalks, Bahia piassava fibre is strong, hard
and smooth. Its water- resilience makes it an excellent
choice for brooms and brushes.
The fibre is stronger than West African piassava and
much finer. It is also more elastic and tends not to
break when bent. Another good advantage of Bahia is that
it will recover its shape well, even with continual
use. |

Production Details:
The fibre is obtained from a palm indigenous
to the coastal areas of the state of Bahia in Brazil.
After the leaves have fallen, a portion of the leaf-stalk
remains attached to the stem of the palm, which in time
decays. These leaf-stalks are harvested, crushed, and the
fibres extracted with a comb. Usually they have to be
treated with water to free the fibres from the leafy
pulp.
These fibres are classified into two grades. The best is
"primeira" which consists of long, strong,
flexible fibre from the fully grown leaf-stalks. The
slightly inferior grade "segunda" consists of
short, slim, inferior fibre.
