Production Details: The coconuts are harvested every 45 to 60 days when aged
between six and eight months. The splitting of the husk is
carried out immediately, either with a knife or by
striking the nut against a wooden stake that is
embedded in the ground. To soften the husks, they are
next soaked in water, "retted", for up to nine
months in pits where bacterial action facilitates
separation of the fibres by partially disintegrating the
pith, which acts as a binding agent.
After this time, the husks are washed and then either beaten
with mallets or mechanically threshed to extract the fibre and separate the pith.
The fibre is then dried and cleaned, and finally the fibre is spun.
